About Chris Abani

Chris Abani is a novelist, poet, essayist, screenwriter and playwright. Born in Nigeria to an Igbo father and English mother, he grew up in Afikpo, Nigeria, received a BA in English from Imo State University, Nigeria, an MA in English, Gender and Culture from Birkbeck College, University of London and a PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Southern California. He has resided in the United States since 2001.

He is the recipient of the PEN USA Freedom-to-Write Award, the Prince Claus Award, a Lannan Literary Fellowship, a California Book Award, a Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, a PEN Beyond the Margins Award, the PEN Hemingway Book Prize and a Guggenheim Award.

Chris Abani’s Publishing Journey

Chris Abani is a Nigerian-born writer who has gained international acclaim for his novels, poetry, and essays. His journey into writing and publishing can be traced through his early interest in Literature, Chris Abani developed a passion for literature and storytelling from a young age. He was exposed to a wide range of literary works, both African and international, which helped fuel his interest in writing.

Abani’s early literary endeavors were in poetry. He began writing poems at a young age and published his first collection of poetry, “Kalakuta Republic,” in 2000. This collection explored themes related to political activism and personal identity. Abani’s first novel, “Masters of the Board,” was published in 1985 when he was just 16 years old. However, it was his novel “GraceLand,” published in 2004, that brought him significant recognition and won the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award. Most of Abani’s novels and peoms were published in the United States of America by Penguin Books, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and by Akashic Books.
