Nigerian writers in diaspora have slowly grown their own slew of literary awards, recognising exceptional creatives, whose words reveal their stories and culture to all who are willing to open their hearts and minds, and whose works are also simply great reads. Based on the illustration above; Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has published more books and won the highest awards and prizes. She is the leading voice of the so-called third generation of Anglophone writers from Nigeria and the diaspora. Chris Abani, Sefi Atta, and Helon Habila have been nominated and awarded, but more on fellowships and nominations. Ben Okri, the oldest writer in the United Kingdom, has received fewer prizes but is as prestigious as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. He has also received more Honorary doctorate degrees than Adichie and other Nigerian writers in the diaspora.

Indeed, over the last decade, authors from the Nigerian diaspora have attracted the attention of a broad international readership. Books by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Teju Cole, Chris Abani, and Ben Okri, among others, have been translated into French, Spanish, German and other languages. Based on the illustration above, all publishers who have earned international recognition and awards have been translated into French Language, Dutch, German, and Italian, among others. Most recently in particular China, a Chinese translation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “Americanah” launched early this year, the fifth of her books to appear in Mandarin including last year’s “Purple Hibiscus” and the controversial “We Should All Be Feminists.” According to the online bilingual database African Writing in Chinese Translation, only two other black African writers have five or more of their works available in Chinese are Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe.
